Over the last few years, I have really enjoyed “staycationing” and discovering all of the unique, and sometimes overlooked, experiences close to home. One of my favourite ways to explore a destination is, of course, through its food, which is why a guided food tour is right up my alley.

I recently had the opportunity to spend three flavour-filled hours sampling, sipping, shopping and strolling on a guided walking food tour. It was such an enjoyable way to experience life in South Georgian Bay through the eyes of a local while discovering some delicious food, drinks and stories along the way.

Collingwood Food Tours offers guided experiences in Collingwood, Creemore, Midland and Thornbury, giving both visitors and locals an opportunity to discover the people, places and flavours that make each community unique.

Each tour includes stops at several different locations, where participants can sample food and beverages from unique local businesses. Along the way, you’ll also learn more about the owners, their establishments and the stories behind what they serve.

Owner and guide Heidi brings another layer to the experience by sharing stories about the area’s rich history, culture and community. It makes the tour about so much more than simply moving from one restaurant to the next. You leave with a better understanding of the destination and the people who have helped shape it.

Although you could certainly visit many of these stops independently, the food tour offers something you simply can’t recreate on your own. It provides a behind-the-scenes, up-close-and-personal experience that highlights the people and stories behind the businesses featured along the way.

Whether you’re visiting a longtime local staple or discovering a newer business, each stop brings something different to the experience, from signature dishes and unique recipes to interesting stories and plenty of local flavour.

With tours available in four of South Georgian Bay’s most charming communities, you can choose your adventure, or make it a goal to experience them all (I’ve done 3 out of the 4).

Each destination has its own personality, history and culinary scene, making the tours a fun option for a day trip, weekend getaway, girls’ day, date or even an opportunity to rediscover somewhere close to home.

You don’t have to be a food connoisseur to enjoy a food tour, either. All you need is a desire to explore, create some wonderful memories and be open to sampling new foods and beverages.

Tours run rain or shine, so be sure to check the forecast and dress accordingly. Alcoholic pairings can also be added to the experience for a nominal additional fee.

If you’re ready to join the thousands of Simcoe County residents, Toronto day-trippers and international visitors who have explored the region through its history, culture, architecture and delicious local food, a guided food tour is a great way to experience some of the best that South Georgian Bay has to offer. Come hungry, wear comfortable shoes and get ready to discover just how much there is to taste and learn close to home.
